During this procedure, the crown of the tooth is opened or accessed allowing the dentist to have visualization of the inside of the tooth. The pulp tissue in the irritated or infected root canal is removed and the canals are cleaned and shaped with a series of files or instruments to remove the nervous or pulp tissue. The root canals are then sealed with a synthetic material called gutta percha. The tooth is then sealed with a filling or a crown.
