What is a Root Canal?

Ans: A root canal is a procedure where the nerves and blood vessels of the tooth are carefully removed from the canals inside the tooth. This empty space is then cleaned and disinfected and a filling material called Gutta Percha is placed into the canal to take the place of the nerve and blood vessels.

Why Do I need a Root Canal?

Ans: There are several reasons why the nerve of your tooth needs to be removed. One reason could be a large cavity in which the decay invades the nerve or pulp of the tooth. Another reason could be  bridge or crown preparation and placement that could have caused nerve damage.

Lastly, the nerve could have received trauma that in effect killed the nerve and caused an abscess(infection) at the tip of the root resulting in the removal of the nerve.

Are Root Canals painful?

Ans: At Marietta Endodontics, we strive to make your appointment as pain free as possible. With the use of topical anesthetic, pain medications and antibiotics as needed, we can minimize your discomfort as much as possible.

What happens after my Root Canal is completed?

Ans: Your tooth or crown has a temporary filling that was placed to prevent leakage and recontamination. Therefore, it is necessary to see your general dentist in 2-4 weeks after treatment to have permanent restoration placed. Your general dentist will evaluate your tooth and choose what type of restoration best meets your needs.

Will I be able to drive and go back to work after my root canal treatment?

Ans: Yes.  A local anesthetic is used for root canal treatment just like it is used for your general dental work, like fillings and crowns. When you leave the office, you will be numb for 1 to 3 hours. Going back to your daily activities should be of no concern. Please note that if you are having a surgical procedure done in our office, you should speak to Dr. Goldstein about post-operative instructions.

What if I need to talk to my Endodontist after working hours?

Ans: We understand that having endodontic treatment can be new or different for each patient. It is quite common and expected for each patient to have many questions or concerns. If you have questions that were not answered while in our office or need to discuss questionable  symptoms with the doctor who treated you, you are welcome to call him/her after hours. By calling our office telephone number, you will hear a message on our

answering service providing the telephone number of the doctor.
